We have really noticed post lockdown that a lot of our patients are mentioning that they feel less steady on their feet. In many cases this is a result of more sitting and less movement over the past year leading to a lack of fitness which can then lead to reduced confidence in your abilities.
The good news is that you can work on balance and strength and improve your mobility by doing a few simple exercises each day.
Top Tips
- Get up and move! The more you move the better, try to walk upstairs even a couple of times, go for a short walk, maybe a wander around your garden, every little helps. Try to get up more often, aim for a bit of movement each hour. A little and often is a great way to build up your strength and resilience.
- Sit on a dining room chair and practice moving from sitting to standing 5-10 times. This is a great exercise for your leg and buttock muscles.
- Hold onto a work surface and do some gentle knee bends, you don’t have to go too far down just an inch or two and you will feel your legs beginning to work again.
- If your balance is not so good hold onto a work surface and practice taking your weight onto one of your legs, practising standing on one leg really helps balance improve.
