Go backPain whilst breastfeeding?
Many new mums really struggle with neck, shoulder or low back pain. It is all too easy to become stuck in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time, especially in the early days when there is a great deal of time spent feeding your baby and your body is still healing.
The following tips may help you:
Sit in a well supported chair – make sure you are nicely positioned with your legs relaxed and lower back supported.
Use lots of pillows! You can use pillows for support under your baby, under your supporting arm, behind your lower back, wherever you need them. Make sure your baby is well supported and that you are not taking the full weight so that you can remain comfortable if you are there fro a while.
Try not to strain your neck – if you continually look down you will become uncomfortable. Try gentle neck movements from side to side, to help prevent neck tension.
Relax your arms and shoulders- if you find yourself tensing take slow deep breathes to help your body release tension, your baby will feel more comfortable if you are relaxed.
Take your time – Often we rush because the baby is crying and end up perched on the edge of the seat for a “quick feed” and 30 minutes later we are still there! You may not find a comfortable position immediately, take time to ensure that you are both relaxed and supported.
If you are concerned or suffering with neck or back aches and pains following the birth of your child we may be able to help. Massage, stretching and gentle exercises can relieve the aches and pains associated with postural tension.
