April is stress awareness month, could understanding more about stress help you?

Stress is something that we all experience  on a day to day basis.

We are all familiar with the racing heart, dry mouth, stomach churning sensations of an acute stress episode. Whilst it is not always pleasant to experience our stress response is crucial to our well being.  When we are put in a threatening position it primes us for action, raising our heart rate, flooding our system with hormones to help us respond and activating our immune system to be ready to fight infections, sharpening our awareness so that we can make quick decisions.  It’s a fantastic system that keeps us safe and  prepares us for action.

However, in todays society often our stressors can tend to be persistent rather than short lived. For example, pressures at work, relationship issues, chronic illness, money worries etc. In these longer term situations, the stress response can stay switched on and becomes less helpful, leading to us feeling permanently stressed/tense or on edge.
